Sad news about Michael Sullivan

  • CID has sad news about Michael Sullivan.

  • Michael was a Chair of the Board and a Director.

  • Michael died this month.

  • We are very proud of the good work we did together for people with intellectual disability.

  • Michael said we should try to be the best we can be.

  • He said people with intellectual disability should be treated as important as everyone else.

  • He wanted everyone to know the great things people with intellectual disability can do

Open letter from Our Health Still Counts

  • CID wrote a letter to all Federal politicians about the Our Health Still Counts campaign.

  • 120 important people signed the letter.

    Some of them are in the picture.

  • The letter asked that health professionals get

    • Training so they know how to support people with intellectual disability
    • The time to give good quality care to people with intellectual disability.

Voting in the Federal Election

  • The Federal Election is on Saturday 3 May 2025.

  • In the Federal Election you can have a say about who runs the country.

  • You can vote in this election if you are

    • 18 and older
    • An Australian citizen
    • Registered to vote.
  • If you do not know who to vote for you can ask for support from someone you trust to find the information you need to decide.

Remembering disability institutions

  • CID worked on a project about how to remember disability institutions with the University of Technology Sydney.

    We say UTS for short.

  • The project is about remembering the disability self advocates who helped close the disability institutions.

  • We have made Easy Read information about

    • What we learned in our project
    • How we can remember disability self advocates
    • How to be a self advocate for closing down disability institutions.

I can decide in my language peer groups

  • I can decide in my language is looking for people with intellectual disability who speak

    • Mandarin
    • Cantonese.
  • We want people to join peer groups.

  • Peer groups are groups where you can talk with people like you.

  • The peer groups will talk about supported decision making.

  • There are also peer groups for supporters.

Making organisations more inclusive

  • CID has services to help organisations be more inclusive.

    Inclusive means we can all be part of things.

  • We have workshops to teach people to write in Easy Read.

  • We can make information into Easy Read for organisations.

  • We can help organisations make plans to be inclusive.

  • We can do focus groups with people with intellectual disability.

    A focus group is a group of people who talk about their ideas and issues.

Advocacy group

  • City of Ryde worked with CID to think about how to employ people with intellectual disability.

  • They have a new job for a person with intellectual disability.

Self advocacy workshop with Down Syndrome NSW

  • Down Syndrome NSW has a self advocacy workshop for adults with Down syndrome.

  • The workshop will be on Sunday 3 May in Burwood.

National Centre for Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health Conference

  • CID is part of the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health.

    We call it the Centre for short.

  • The Centre works to make health care better for people with intellectual disability.

  • The Centre is having a conference from 3 to 4 July.

  • The conference is for anyone who is interested in intellectual disability health.

  • There are scholarships to support you to go to the conference.

  • A scholarship is money you can use to learn something.

NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission Easy Read information

  • CID helped make new Easy Read information for the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

  • It is about changes they want to make to the law.

Social media research

  • The Centre for Disability Studies is doing research on how people with intellectual disability use social media.

  • Some examples of social media are

    • Facebook
    • Instagram.
  • The researchers want to find out how social media helps you

    • Talk to others
    • Show who you are online.
  • You can do this research if you are 18 or older.

  • The researchers want to interview you about some of your own posts and comments.

  • You will choose which posts and comments to talk about.
