Going shopping for food is something we all need to do.
But for now, with Coronavirus, we need to take extra steps to avoid getting sick.
It’s helpful to write a shopping list before you leave the house so you spend less time walking around the store.
Try to limit how often you shop and go at less busy times
It is also good to do your shopping in one visit rather than doing lots of small trips to the supermarket.
If possible, try to go when it is less busy. The busiest times are at lunch time and after 3 o’clock.
Wash your hands well at home before going out
Before leaving the house it is important to wash your hands really well. Use soap and wash for 20 seconds.
Clean the trolley or basket with disinfectant wipes
When you get to the supermarket, clean the trolley or shopping basket before you use it. Remember to take disinfectant wipes in case the store does not provide them.
Wipe all surfaces you will touch. Then throw the wipe away immediately.
Keep a safe distance from staff and other shoppers
When you’re shopping, it is important to keep a safe distance from other people. This is called social distancing.
A good guide is to keep the length of the shopping trolley between you and other people.
Most supermarkets will have signs on the floor near the checkout to show you where it is safe to stand when lining up. Stand on these signs.
Pack your own bags at the checkout
When you get to the checkout, try to pack your own shopping bags so that fewer people touch your things.
Use hand sanitiser when you leave the shop
After you leave the store, use hand sanitiser to clean your hands again.
Wash your hands again when you get home
When you get home it is very important to wash your hands with water and soap.
Wash the fresh food and leave pantry items for 3 days
You then need to wash your fruit and vegetables before putting them away.
Everything can be washed with cold running water.
And when it comes time to use the food, just peel and cook as usual.
With pantry goods, you can leave them for 3 days before putting them away.
After 3 days they should be safe to touch.
This may seem like a lot of steps, but they are important to keep us all safe and healthy.
Stay safe and happy shopping!
