[Text: My name is Kellie. I live in Wagga Wagga. This is my story.]
Amanda-Lee:
Oh what can I say about Kellie?
[Kellie laughs]
Amanda-lee:
She’s full of life. She’s a social butterfly.
Kellie:
Yeah, yeah.
Alison:
Kellie is a real character.
Michael:
She gets around town a fair bit
Amanda:
Everybody knows Kell. If we walk to the pool, every second person is saying Hello to Kell.
[Kellie laughs]
She’s a bit of a celebrity in Wagga. Everybody knows her. You go downtown and everyone’s like, ‘Hi Kell!’
Shorty:
Kell’s got a great personality. She’s a lovely young person.
Michael:
We’ve been friends for twenty-eight years and she’s an absolute cheeky person.
Amanda:
Always making everybody laugh.
Sam:
She’s just cool.
Kellie:
Yeah.
Sam:
She’s cheeky.
[Kellie and Sam laugh together.]
[Text: I love socialising.]
Alison:
Kellie is – her main thing is – she just makes everyone around her really happy. She has got her own way of communicating with people.
Sam (Reading):
C…O…M…Your computer?
Kellie:
Yeah.
Alison:
Kellie really loves to go on the computer. Facebook is, like, her favourite thing, so she likes to keep in contact with all her friends that way. She has a lot to say, so that gives her a great way of communicating with other people.
Sam (Reading):
E…M…A…I…L…Email?
Kellie:
Yeah.
Sam:
She likes to send emails
Kellie:
Yeah.
Sam:
Me and Kell have been friends for twelve years.
Kellie:
Yeah.
Sam:
We go to the movies. We go bowling, we go to lunch. Walk the lake.
Sam:
G…R…E…A…T
Kellie:
Yeah.
Sam:
So when I’m with my friends I feel great.
[Text: I love playing Alphy.]
Amanda-Lee:
Two favourite things are Alphy…
Kellie:
Yeah.
Amanda-Lee:
And swimming.
Kellie:
Yeah.
Shorty:
If anyone’s familiar with bingo, Alphy works in a similar sort of way.
Amanda-Lee:
The object of the game is to cover all your letters, then you call out Alphy. Every week, Kellie plays twenty games. It’s a really nice day out.

Kellie:
Yeah.
Amanda-Lee:
Hanging out with your friends?
Kellie:
Yeah!
[Text: I also love swimming.]
Amanda:
As soon as she touches that water, you can tell she’s happy. She loves just being able to get in the water and move her body around. Walking’s probably her favourite activity.
[Kellie laughs.]
Swimming’s really important for Kell. Being in a chair all the time is putting a lot of strain on her body. In that water, she can get her body moving and her muscles start working a lot.
Kellie:
Aw, gee.
Amanda:
It’s hard, isn’t it Kell?
Kellie:
Yeah.
Amanda:
You’re doing well, though.
Amanda:
What does it feel like, Kell? Nice just to be able to able to do something…
Kellie: Yeah.
Amanda:
…different. Being able to do what everybody else does like go underwater.
Alison:
She just really seems able to bring out the best in other people. She doesn’t let her disability hold her back in any way.
