What CID thinks about health

  • Position statements say what CID thinks about different issues.

  • Each position statement has an Easy Read version.

  • This position statement is about health care.

  • People with intellectual disability do not get the same health care as other people.

  • They do not get good support.

  • This means people with intellectual disability have a worse time with their health.

  • We want health workers to ask people with intellectual disability how to support them.

  • We want health workers to get trained on how to give people with intellectual disability good care.

  • We want there to be more Intellectual Disability Health Teams.

  • Intellectual Disability Health Teams know how to work with people with intellectual disability.

  • We also want more mental health teams for people with intellectual disability.

Young Voices Big Choices

  • CID has a new project called Young Voices Big Choices.

  • It is for

    • Young people with intellectual disability who are 16 to 25
    • Their families.
  • The program helps young people and families learn about supported decision making.

  • This means young people can make their own decisions with support.

  • Young people will also learn about what a good life looks like for them.

  • This project will

    • Run Supported Decision Making and Good Life workshops
    • Help young people set goals and make plans for after school
    • Support families to plan together
    • Run parent peer support groups.

Supported employment advocacy

  • CID is working with Inclusion Australia on a project about employment.

  • The project is about getting good information so you can make decisions about jobs.

  • We are running workshops for

    • People working in supported employment
    • Young people with intellectual disability who are leaving school.

CID Out and About

  • Here are some things that CID did in February.

Making organisations more inclusive

  • CID has services to help organisations be more inclusive.

    Inclusive means we can all be part of things.

  • We have workshops to teach people to write in Easy Read.

  • We can make information into Easy Read for organisations.

  • We can help organisations make plans to be inclusive.

  • We can do focus groups with people with intellectual disability.

    A focus group is a group of people who talk about

    • their ideas
    • their issues.

Easy Read information on Healthdirect

  • CID worked with Healthdirect.

  • Healthdirect is a website where you can look up information about

    • Health issues
    • Health services.
  • CID helped Healthdirect make Easy Read health information for people with intellectual disability.

  • The first Easy Read information is about abdominal pain.

  • Abdominal pain is pain that happens around your belly and hips.

  • You can find it on the Healthdirect website.

Training for health workers

  • The National Centre for Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health works for better health for people with intellectual disability.

    We say the Centre for short.

  • The Centre has written a position paper about training for health workers.

  • The Centre wants health workers to have the right training to support people with intellectual disability.

  • Good training helps health workers care for people with intellectual disability better.
